Like beer? Like exercise? Then you'll LOVE this...

It's not uncommon to hear the word beer and think big men swigging back pints after a long day at work. Well time to think differently if you drink German non alcoholic wheat beer!

The Department of Preventative and Rehabilitative Sports Medicine of the University of Munich gathered data during the world's largest study of marathons called "Be-MaGIC" (beer, marathons, genetics, inflammation and the cardiovascular system). They found that the consumption of non-alcoholic weissbier, or wheat beer, has a positive effect on athletes' health. Led by Dr. Johannes Scherr physicians examined 277 test subjects three weeks before and two weeks after the 2009 Munich Marathon.

The study focuses on the health affects of running (inflammation, lower immune response) and the positive affects of polyphenols a naturally occurring substance in plants that have shown to have anti cancerous properties too. 

As we know running long distance comes with its stresses. The body naturally increases its inflammatory response and this can weaken the immune response opening us up to colds or respiratory infections. This however was reduced after drinking non alcoholic wheat beer. The parameters for inflammation were the volume of leukocytes in the blood (white blood cells) and the number reduced by 20%. The runners also reported less respiratory track infections/ colds.

How did the runners drink the beer? 

The participants were split into two groups. Control and intervention. One with polyphenol wheat beer and one without the polyphenols. They were all allocated a volume of 1.1.5L/day of the drink 3 weeks before and for 2 weeks after.
